Who am I?

I never tire of this view! This is a picture taken from our front porch. We have been very thankful for this beautiful place we call home for now!

As we learn more about GOD the more we realize how small we are and how great a privilege we have to serve a wonderful loving Heavenly father! Knowing who we are in Christ is of utmost importance in order for us take our place beside JESUS, seated in the heavenly realms, that's what the Word of God says!  I'm no longer known as a sinner saved by grace, although it is clear that by grace I am saved, but more than that God has chosen me, He has seated me with JESUS, and Jesus is the ruler of all! For the time being we are living in this earthly tent but soon we will be swept up to live forever in GODS presence! For now the enemy is the ruler of this world, but JESUS has overcome this world, and we can too, abiding in JESUS the author and finisher of our faith! Connected to Jesus the true vine, we will bear much fruit!

Who I Am In Christ

  • I am God's child (see John 1:12)
  • I am Christ's friend (see John 15:15)
  • I have been justified (see Romans 5:1)
  • I am united with the Lord, and I am one spirit with Him (see 1 Corinthians 6:17)
  • I have been bought with a price: I belong to God. (see 1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
  • I am a member of Christ's Body (see 1 Corinthians 12:27)
  • I am a saint, a holy one (see Ephesians 1:1)
  • I have been adopted as God's child (see Ephesians 1:5)
  • I have direct access to God through the Holy Spirit (see Ephesians 2:18)
  • I have been forgiven of all my sins (see Colossians 1:14)
  • I am complete in Christ (see Colossians 2:10)

Good day Costa Rica!

Greetings from our home in Costa Rica! I just realized it has been several years since I wrote anything on the blog! We are starting a new year 2021 with much anticipation of what GOD will do in us and through us!

We are celebrating 20 years in ministry this month! God has been good these 20 years and has blessed us abundantly! We have been with Global Outreach since May 2000 and so appreciate the work Global is doing around the world! We have mission sites in 40 different countries and 200+ missionaries serving our LORD!

We were able to spend a few months visiting our family September-October and November. We first visited James he lives in Baltic Ohio and works at Comfort Suites in Berlin Ohio. He loves his Job and the church he is involved in is his family! We enjoyed our visit there with the brothers and sisters in Ohio.

We then traveled to KY to see Joel and Sara and our sweet grandchildren! Skylin, Sara daughter, is 7 years old, we were able to be there for her birthday party! What a joy to have this special time with our children! Joel has a new baby boy he is 7 months old this month. Bennett Lee is a sweet baby very happy and content! We were also able to visit Franklin's parents while we were there in Owensboro. We then traveled to see my family in Bowling Green KY, about an hour south. We were able to see my brothers and sister who live there and my dad and Ida my step mom. We enjoyed a great visit with many nieces and nephews! We then traveled to MS where Mary and Troy live. We enjoyed several weeks visit there with them, playing games at night and enjoying meals together! Troy made BBQ nachos yum! we then traveled to Florida and visited Todd and Roya and Mark Franklins cousins and Ruth Ann his aunt. We also had a week with family enjoying the ocean and meals and games together! James flew down from Ohio, Mary and Troy came in from MS and Sara and Skylin drove down from KY! Franklin celebrated a birthday while we were together very special! Very wonderful to be with our family!

We then traveled back in time to celebrate Thanksgiving with Franklins mom and spent a day with my sister Emma and her family. We also spent 2 days with my sister Kenosha family in PA. We then went back to James and spent the weekend and he took us to the airport to fly back here to Costa Rica! James let us use his car while we traveled wonderful to have James support!

We have been very busy since getting back home we have been repairing water pipes and vehicles. We had to make several trips to town for oil and supplies for the back hoe to prepare for the work ahead! We plan to do some work on the main road into the camp, and also more dirt work on the future sports complex for camp.

We are preparing for teams coming in March, May & June. Thank you for your prayers for us! May the LORD richly bless you in this new year!

Costa Rica June 2018

Good evening from Costa Rica!
Hope this finds you well!
Sorry it's been so long since I posted on here!
We have been busy! We had a great trip to the USA! We started our trip the week before Resurrection week which is known around the US as Easter. But the JESUS followers knew this week as the celebration of the leader JESUS CHRIST of Nazareth resurrection from the dead!  What a celebration!
Now while JESUS was here on earth he raised several people from the dead, recorded in the Gospels, in John 11 Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, he raised the little girl from the dead in Luke 9, then in Luke 10 Jesus tells us to heal the sick cleanse the lepers, and yes! raise the dead! So much more than bunnies and eggs for this great celebration of our LORDS rising from the dead forever more to live! And we will be raised along with JESUS as He comes back to receive us into HIS Kingdom! Amen!

So the last week of March we were able to celebrate as a family; Joel came in from California, Mary & Troy drove down from Mississippi, Sara & Skylin from Kentucky and James from South Carolina.
we spent 4 days on the beach with them in FLA :=) lots of granddaughter time! YAY!

We then traveled to SC with James and spent 10 days at Evangelical Institute of South Carolina where James has been studying! We were able to attend the annual Prayer Conference there at the school. We were also able to attend classes with James and enjoy some wonderful bible teaching! Praise the LORD!

One of the main reasons we went to the US was to see Mary graduate, she finished her 5 years at BMC and received a Bachelor of Science of Education degree with honors; now she is a teacher, Spanish and English! Praise the LORD!
Then we traveled on the SC to see James testimony and he received a diploma for finishing the 2 year program at EI School of Biblical training.
We finished off our time spending time with both our families and got back here to Costa Rica on May 23. On May 26 we received 7 young men for the 2nd one week session of the School of Christ here at the camp and Biblical training center. we are thankful that GOD has allowed us to be a part of forming lives for the Body of CHRIST! Amen!
Thank you for praying for us and giving to make this mission possible! May the LORD richly bless you in all HIS abundance in Christ Jesus our LORD!
JESUS BLESS YOU! Franklin &  Evelyn

Caleb's visit

Rachel and I have been friends since 2005 when she first came to Tabarcia to learn Spanish! In 2014 Rachel and Jorge were married, and live in San Jose. They have 2 children now! Their family came for a visit to the camp center! Caleb is 3 and a busy little guy! He loved their visit and enjoyed very much getting to get up in the back hoe! He cried when we had to get out and keep walking!

Every boy, great or small love the back hoe! It has been a great blessing! Franklin was able to dig the septic line for Cabin Faithful and has done all the road work and clearing land since this handy tool was shipped here in 2008! Praise the LORD!

Tropical storm Nate; Pozos de Puriscal

Wednesday we started getting heavy rains, it continued into the night and at around 4 am we lost electricity, it just came back on Friday afternoon around 1pm! We have been working inside the conference building so we continued to work! We heard yesterday it was a tropical storm, we hadn't seen any news!
Then this morning Luis who helps here at Camp said he could barely walk through, a mudslide on the road here! So we went up with back hoe, machetes and chain saw. Thankfully the local men had already began work clearing debris and in less than 2 hours we had a path cleared for vehicles to come through!
They were working as we arrived and they all seemed relieved for the back hoe to come! By hand it is really hard to get much done, but they had put strong arms into action! Thank you to each of you for praying for us as we work! This month will take more diesel fuel, thank you for giving to make this work possible!

New week!

 GOD is able,
This is a scripture that God brought to my attention a while back.
2 Corinthians 9:8 and GOD is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.
Whe we say GOD is able, thats an understatement.
GOD is more than able to help us, always present even when we are unaware!

This has been a rainy week here in Costa Rica. This time of year is always very rainy at least the mornings are sunny!
We are working taking off all the wall board in the bedrooms up stairs in the conference building. It must all be replaced. We will take it all off and brush off the rust and repaint all the framework. We will have to build scaffolding because the ceilings are about 15ft high! We have a group coming in December to help put this all back on. Thankful for the help GOD has sent our way!
Thank you for your partnership with us in prayer and support! GOD richly bless you!

....for every good work, then GOD is able to help us not unconditionally but it is like a partnership between us and GOD. HE has done HIS part, now it's our turn to do our part. First to believe in GOD through JESUS our LORD, then follow JESUS doing everything JESUS commanded.

Matthew 5-7 is a great place to hear what JESUS requires of us. The 10 commandments were what Moses gave the Israelite people when he came down fro the mountain from talking to GOD. Now Jesus kept all the commandments, and  finished out HIS time here on earth, perfectly, not failing in the tiniest detail. No one in history had been able to this! Only JESUS!
THE PERFECT LIFE like GOD had commanded. Then when JESUS was killed as the sacrifice for our sins and was buried as the Scriptures said would happen, 3 days later was raised from the dead! That power lives in each of us as we follow our great leader JESUS CHRIST!
I'm thankful to have been chosen by GOD to live this life, giving glory to GOD as we walk this daily life here on earth, following JESUS, as we prepare to receive the KINGDOM OF GOD alongside JESUS our perfect brother. As we walk with JESUS we are made perfect in weakness day by day.

Lets work while it is day, night time os coming when no one can work. Be encouraged as you walk out your faith in CHRIST and don't give up this wonderful calling! JESUS is able! HE will keep you in his care, not allowing you to be  tested above what you can take, giving us the escape alongside the test.
Keep in there! GOD bless you today and always!

Women on mission

Good Morning from Costa Rica!
this group came to the conference for ladies in July. This was a great time of seeking JESUS as we have named the annual women's conference. There were ladies from Nicaragua in the group. They had to get through several obstacles and were greatly encouraged by the Word of GOD they received and shared as they spent 3 nights and 4 days here at Taller Del Maestro! There were 50 people in all a few men and children as well! What a celebration!
This camp and Bible training center is to bring the good news of Salvation in JESUS CHRIST to each person coming here. Even those who have been in church, I include myself, we have not fully understood this great salvation the writer says in Hebrews 2:8 how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him.
We are thankful for the grace of GOD who has given us forgiveness and has waited for us to come obedient to JESUS for all our lives and as we step into eternity. God is so good!
Be encouraged to keep following JESUS in your daily life, walking in faith in GOD who is faithful!

Today Franklin was able to go help a friend, Luis one of the men who helps out here at camp. Luis got some tile so Franklin went to help cut it to size and since he's been gone awhile I imagine he helped lay the tile as well!
Pray that as we walk out our faith in GOD in our daily life we'd be aware that every opportunity is an open door to minister the Righteousness of GOD to each person, in every way! May we be found faithful to our LORD JESUS always!
Thank you for your prayers and gifts in support of our ministry here in Costa Rica!

9-11

Good afternoon,
Tomorrow James will be 19 years old! James changed our lives as he came into our family, and still today he's the change we needed in our life! GOD is so good!
In 2 days James will be returning to the US to continue to his studies at EI school of biblical training. We are thankful for James and that he has this opportunity to study the Bible. Please pray for James and the other students as they go receive this Biblical training to go into their world and encourage and change the way we look at GOD by teaching GODS WORD!

We have been here at camp all day today. We have been cleaning getting ready for a group coming to spend the weekend in a retreat to seek GOD September 16-17. Praise GOD!
Today we were able to watch some video of the events 16 years ago, how could it have been that long already! I remember as many do, we were so scared no one knew what was next as the horrific scenes unfolded on our tv screens that fateful day!
I cried again as we re-watched the twin towers fall as we did on that day in 2001! It has definitely been good to reflect back and remember how we all prayed more that day than maybe we ever had!
So going forward, we can't go back and change things, but we can change the outcome, what happens from here on out, in the world around us. We wake up, we go on about our little lives sometimes not realizing that what we have is a new day to do GODS WILL and not our own, a new day to focus back on JESUS the author and finisher of our FAITH!
What is faith? What is truth? Where can we find faith and who do we turn to for truth?
Faith is defined in many ways, faith in GOD is believing that HE exists, believing beyond what we can see feel or touch or smell. GOD is real, and HE created us in HIS image. We can talk to GOD, that may seem elementary to some, but sometimes we just need a reminder that GOD is near no matter what!
Truth, what is truth? Pilate asked that question when he was interrogating JESUS, not knowing that the TRUTH was standing right in front of him in bodily form. Jesus didn't answer Pilates question, and I have a feeling Jesus isn't answering us either.
We want to know the truth but we run in circles looking everywhere but to the One who said, "I AM the way the truth and the life no man comes to the FATHER but by me," John 14:6 Lets look to JESUS, no more turning away to look at someone else for the truth or worse yet, looking in the mirror hoping to see a tiny line of truth in the face staring back at me!
As we walk into another year, 17 years SINCE 9-11, lets not just stand there, lets tell someone about the truth we have found, JESUS the CHRIST, our Savior! The only one who truly has the answers to our questions, the truth we haven't found anywhere else!
Keep JESUS first!
JESUS BLESS YOU! Franklin Evelyn Mary & James

Camp life

These lillies grow close to the spring below our home here at Camp. In the first years of living here and clearing the land everything was overgrown including these beautiful plants. We cut every small bush and plant including these lilies! But we realized these were useful for drawing the water level up as well as protecting the area from washing away! So we are allowing them to slowly grow back! They are tall marshy plants I wouldn't want to walk among them but they are in the ditch and spring area so I can enjoy the beautiful flowers but don't have to cross that way!

You may not be able to see it very well, but the mountain in the background is bright pink! Franklin and I walked out on the porch to this view a few days ago! WOW! The sun was shining on this mountain and it glowed! The same day many of you saw the eclipse! Here we didn't get to enjoy the eclipse although in Costa Rica the sun was about half covered by the moon, but at the time it was cloudy and rainy here! But GOD gave us this beautiful view a few hours later Praise the LORD!
We are continuing the work here at the Camp and Bible Training center. Yesterday Franklin and James helped me wash our porch. Being outside it gets a lot of dust and spider webs so we cleaned the cieling and then washed the floors with the power washer.
Today they have rented a jack hammer and are busting the rock out in front of the shop. We plan to put a basketball court there soon! Thank you for praying for us as we work here in Costa Rica! May the LORD provide your needs and give you strength to do the work HE has called you to! Each of us has been put on earth for GODS glory. Work today! Do it for JESUS!

Where are you?

Good Afternoon from Costa Rica!
This is a beautiful evening, my music right now is the locusts, hundreds of them singing praises to the LORD!
I'd be ok if they sang a little lower tone at least! I'm certain GOD has created them for a reason, maybe to teach me patience!

WHERE ARE YOU?
This is the first question we find in the Bible and therefore we should find out why, who said it, who is HE calling, etc.

The story of the BIBLE is GODS story, and somehow, for HIS sake HE allows us to scribble on those sacred pages our story as well. GOD loves it when we stop and look, then HE knows HE has our attention!

So The Story begins with in the beginning GOD... then a page or so into it, GOD creates man and woman, sets them in the Garden of Eden to take care of it. YEP, GOD didn't intend for us to shift through life with nothing to do. Idle hands get in trouble.

As the story of GOD unfolds, (Have you ever wondered who was there to record all this, obviously there were no cameras or reporters yet) GOD puts man in the garden, tells them to care for HIS garden and be caretaker of HIS creation. Perfect, all is set, GOD has created a perfect world, the man and woman are happy, GOD walks with them each evening and all is well.
God blessed them and said to them,Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” Genesis 1:28
The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” Genesis 2:15-16

So GOD gave the humans 2 commands, be fruitful and multiply, and rule over the animals/ then GOD also gave a command, "do not" with consequences, you will die; now the man ate the fruit and didn't immediately die, but our relationship with GOD was severed from that moment on we could no longer talk with GOD face to face.
The commands GOD gave man in the beginning seem like small things; that to us today seem insignificant. BUT GOD doesn't suggest, GOD is our Creator, and HE has a right to our complete undivided attention and obedience.

So GOD said rule over the animals, but one animal was very sly and deceived the woman who in turn deceived her husband, they ate the forbidden fruit, and we've been separated from GOD our Creator ever since.

Now it wasn't eating that was sin, it was disobeying what GOD had said!

GOD called to Adam and said, "where are you?" Throughout history GOD is still calling us, "Where are you?" GODS voice echoes throughout history; we act like we don't need GOD and have each one of us turned to our own ways. As adam, we have the immediate reaction to answer GOD with, "she did it", "he did it", pointing fingers, when in fact, we are guilty! BUT GOD is faithful to HIS creation, all we have to do is stop, turn to face GOD and HE showers HIS forgiveness on us as we repent and turn to HM!

So when we are in a crisis, we turn to GOD. If we turn with our whole heart, intent to KNOW GOD, HE turns to us and shows how HIS everlasting love will never change for HIS creation. GOD is just a righteous and so until we repent GOD has limited himself to not helping us. But the moment we repent and turn to GOD, HE comes to our rescue!

WHERE ARE YOU? Answer GOD now and turn in repentance to GOD now before the door closes and time runs out!

JESUS BLESS YOU! Franklin Evelyn Mary & James

Fuz or thorns?

Good morning from Costa Rica! We took a walk in our yard yesterday evening and to the front gate and around the front of the camp property. We are amazed at how God has provided amazingly and wonderfully for our family and this ministry!
Thank you for giving to support us as we follow God in building Taller del Maestro camp and Bible training center!
So in our yard right close to the house we have these trees; they are a palm but look closely at the trunk! It has 2-3 inch spikes all around it in intervals, from bottom to top!
Even the branches have these spikes on them! It's amazing how God created these trees, they produce fruit called pejibayes. The people boil the fruit it's round, they cut it in half and eat it at coffee time! They have a nutty flavor; James says they taste like dirt!
Praise The Lord every day and take a walk in your yard; God has created amazing things right outside your doorstep!
Though from a distance they appear to have Fuz on these trees, a closer look reveals spikes, when I look at these trees it reminds me to give thanks to God through our Lord Jesus, thorns like these were driven into His skull by cruel oppressors but my sin hurts Him more than any thorns ever could have! Help me Lord to repent and turn quickly to You for cleansing so as not to hurt you more by my rebelion! Thank you Lord Jesus for your love for us!

Camp life!

Thank you for your prayers for our ministry here in Costa Rica! This is what's been happening here! Rebecca a friend of mine asked me to use the parachute this week! She's hosting out reaches to local schools! A church in the states brought this parachute in 2009 and it's been put to good use! Thank you for giving to The Lord!
This is a view I see daily walking here at camp! The cabins are such a blessing to me personally I love the fact that hundreds of pairs of hands have been used to build these beautiful buildings, not just the physical hands of people who have come to build but each if you who by your prayers have built into Gods kingdom by loving our family along, praying for the teams coming to minister, praying for funds to be brought in as needed, and praying for our safety as we minister in the Name if Jesus! Thank you!

Basketball game before church!

The team from Thaxton MS got here last night they will be off to church in a few minutes enjoying a little basket ball before church! Thank you to each of you for praying for us and for giving to make this mission possible!

Camp & Bible training center

Good evening from Costa Rica! These are some pictures I took as I walked this morning!
So thankful for this place of refuge and retreat from the rest of the world! Thank you for your prayers and support if our work here!

The dogs accompany me as I walk in the mornings! I enjoy the sounds and catch the occasional toucan flying across! Franklin saw a toucan trying to rob another birds nest today! Then tonight as the darkness was closing in around 5pm 4-5 toucans came flying close to the house into the trees next to the house. One by one they landed in the trees and then one went in a 2 inch hole in a tree, followed by another, they go in beak first, and stick their beak out the hole as they turn around and settle in for the night! 2 toucans in a tiny hole I couldn't imagine how they could fit! Then a third toucan came, landed and tried to go in, teetered back and forth then flew on to another home! Full home! Isn't God amazing! And if The Lord so takes care if the birds arranging beds for each one, how will God not take care if you and me! God loves us much more than the birds, and provides our every need! May The Lord greatly bless you as you serve Him! Peace and love in JESUS, Franklin & Evelyn

Journey

Good Morning from MS!
This is a cloudy May morning here in Mississippi! We traveled up to KY to see Skylin our granddaughter and the rest of our families. Skylin will be 3 October 9! She is talking and a bubbly little 2 year old! What a joy to be able to share some time with our family!

We then traveled to visit Evangelical Institute of Greenville, South Carolina.
James is planning to start classes there this fall LORD willing! We are excited about James furthering his education and more than that excited that James wants to minister in the Name of JESUS as a pastor!

EI offers a 2 year Bible training course in preparation for ministry. They are adding another year starting this fall to further help pastors to be prepared to minister! This school was founded by Joseph Carroll who used to minister directly to missionaries on the field in the country they were as they ministered to the people. He founded Evangelical Institute to help ministers before going on the mission field. We were able to sit in on some classes as we visited and were impressed with how they begin and end with prayer, each class and every activity at the school!

We are very thankful for James being accepted into this school and look forward to seeing how GOD will use James to minister to others in the Name of JESUS!

Now we have come to MS to be with Mary and help Mary & Troy prepare for their wedding June 4th. They are excited; they had wedding showers this weekend and have a lot of nice gifts to set up housekeeping!
We are also in the process of James getting his GED in order for him to enter college this fall! He is taking classes at ICC a local community college in Tupelo. They have been a great blessing to James and we would highly recommend this college for seeking higher education to find better jobs!
We will be living at the Global Outreach apartments while we are here in MS.

Franklin and I return to Costa Rica on June 11. We are hoping to have James settled with a job and place to live in Greenville SC before this. If you know someone who would be willing to help James in SC please let us know; our numbers are Franklin 662-231-2306 or Evelyn 270-499-9361 or by email at turnerefmj@gmail.com

Would appreciate your prayers as our family works through each of these details. Pray that we would be sensitive to GODS leading through the Holy Spirit as we minister to our family and the people of Costa Rica.

If you would like to give towards James Bible School you can send your gift to Global Outreach for Franklin & Evelyn Turner (James education) You can either give online at www.globaloutreach.org or you can send a check to Global Outreach P.O. Box 1 Tupelo MS 38802

Thank you so much for standing with us as we minister in JESUS Name in Costa Rica!

Youth campers

Good Morning from Costa Rica!
we have had a busy few weeks seems like GOD is moving us forward each week is a new opportunity to stretch us a little more to do GODS will and be who HE wants us to be!
We enjoyed hosting 15 youth and leaders for an Armor of GOD youth retreat! What a blessing to have these young people here at the camp and Bible training center! They live a simple life and are happy with so much less than we are!

We hope to regularly host camps and Bible training seminars this is the reason GOD brought us here to Costa Rica!
We have prepared and are in the process of finishing the construction of the buildings and the landscaping of the camp grounds.
If you'd like to be a part of this process we'd love the help you can call Carolyn Roye at Global Outreach 662-842-4615 she is our teams coordinator she will let you know what dates we have open and she can give personal testimony of the camp she came with a team from her church a few years ago!
Appreciate your prayers for us as we follow GODS call to serve him here in Costa Rica!
May the LORD richly bless you today and always!

Evelyns testimony

Good Afternoon!
Just thought I would share a little about how GOD has worked in my life and how I am where I am today!
I was born in Washington Indiana on June 28 1971. I have 6 brothers and 3 sisters. My family is Amish.
When I was 1 year old we moved from Indiana to Milton, Iowa where I spent the next 19 years. My earliest memories are riding in a buggy in the cold with hot bricks at our feet to keep from freezing! I went to Amish Private School starting in 1st grade at 6 years old. My friend Mary Ann and I were the only ones in our grade. One of my earliest memories was our teacher Allan in 1st grade. I remember we got play a lot and color a lot of pictures! It was hard for me learn to read and I was ashamed to admit that I couldn't tell time, I don't remember what age I finally knew how to look at the clock and know what time it was!
We were in class with all 8 grades in a one room school house with a wood stove in the corner with our cheese sandwiches wrapped in foil on the stove top warming up to have something hot for lunch! We had shelves as we came in the school house where we'd drop off our lunch boxes, we got a new lunch box each year!  We'd hang our coats on hooks in this same room along with black rubber boots we'd wear over our black school shoes.
One day we were in class and our teacher Allan went to answer a knock on the door, in the coat room. We heard scuffling and huffing, then in a little while teacher Allan came in, with scrapes on his nose and head, & a black eye; he told us we could all go home. So our older brothers hitched up the horse and buggy in the school barn and off we went!
I have fond memories of school, books weren't much fun for me but I loved my friends!
In Iowa it snows a lot and very cold in the wintertime. We always had a pair of ice skates, and being from a family of 10, each year as we grew we got to wear our older brothers and sisters skates! I remember one year it stayed cold so long and ice on the road ways we skated to school!
My dad had an ice house and the men would get together when it had been cold for several weeks and the pond was solid frozen. They'd have a push lawn mower type of machine powered by a gas motor with a blade that was attached horizontally on the machine. The men would take it to the pond and cut blocks of ice and put them in a sled drawn by horses and carry the to the ice house, a little shack they would layer ice, sawdust and brown paper feed sacks. This ice would be preserved for several months and the Amish families would use this to make yummy home made ice cream!
When I was 12 we moved to a new community I must have been depressed because I remember sleeping a lot & always tired! We caught a hamster like creature that year and kept it in the house for a long time, but it got away and that was the end of our pet!
We would do our laundry in a wringer washer, then hang it out on lines strung on posts close to the wash house. In the wintertime the laundry would freeze in the basket before we ever got it hung up!The small pieces of wash we'd hang up on a wooden dowel clothes rack in the house.
In the summers Mom would have a huge garden and we helped hoe the garden, gather the veggies and did a lot of canning. We would mow the grass with a push mower I guess this is one way you keep 10 kids busy!
We always had 100-200 new chickens each year and we dressed all our own meat so from a young age I knew how to cut up a chicken for frying, and how to cut up pork and beef. My family are hunters so we all learned how to shoot a gun and all of us would go deer hunting. I remember one year I was in a deer stand close to my dad and he shot a big buck. As the deer fell his antlers split in hundreds of little pieces! The deer meat was a treat for all of us!
When I was 17 we spent the winter in FLA for my dads health. This was a teenagers dream! Florida offered a lot of sin and being young and full of energy I fell in with bad company! My sister and I worked as waitresses in a restaurant and this gave us money for our wanderings!
Thankfully we only stayed there 6 months, then returned to our Amish community in Iowa. The Amish had church every other week, the in between Sunday was game day at my house. My older brothers and sister were married by this time, so I loved my little nieces and nephews coming over! We'd eat brunch around 10am then play games and eat snacks the rest of the day finishing out the day with popcorn in the evening!
When I was 20 we moved from Iowa to TN to a place where there was no Amish church. The neighbors invited us to go to Bible School at a missionary Baptist with them. At this time Franklin and I started dating & we were married in February 1992. Franklin had Joel who was 8 years old at the time and Sara who was 5. This was a big undertaking for a youngster of 20, GOD is able! We went to Glennville Baptist church and that same year Franklin rented a movie called A Thief in the Night. When I watched this movie I realized I would not go to Heaven if I died, so Franklin prayed with me to give my life to JESUS CHRIST. Joel also prayed that night to begin his walk with JESUS! This was life-changing for me. GOD is so good!
We served in our church where I taught Sunday School and helped with Bible School. Franklin was Sunday School director and we also helped out with the youth program. Our couples group started a Bible study led by dear friends Wanda and Bob Leslie. We really started being hungry for more of GOD and to follow after GOD and this Bible study helped us to learn how to read the Bible.
Mary Emma was born in Feb 1995 and James in Sept1998.
In 1998 when James was a small baby a missionary came to our church to share about missions in Africa. Franklin went to the altar to receive the mission call. We immediately started to seek ways to get involved short term as volunteers. We kept coming to a dead end and thought surely we had heard GOD wrong!
It wasn't until 1999 at the county fair in Calhoun, KY that Franklin met up with Danny a friend who he hadn't seen since high school. Danny invited Franklin to go on a mission trip of a lifetime to Haiti in January 2000. There Franklin met David and Judy Heady, who were from Owensboro KY, 15 miles from our home! This is how we learned about Global Outreach.  We were accepted as missionaries with Global Outreach in May 2000 and January 2001 we came to the mission field for the very first time as a family to learn Spanish.
We moved to Belize for 3 years after language school, then in 2004 we were able to come back to Costa Rica full time with Global Outreach. We are in the process of developing Taller del Maestro Global Outreach Camp and Bible Training Center.

Thank you for your prayers and support of our ministry here in Costa Rica!
GOD is moving and we are excited about what this new year 2016 holds for this place!
JESUS BLESS YOU! Franklin Evelyn Mary & James
